William T. Riker

Next up in the Star Trek: TNG Archive is everyone's favorite first officer: Riker, William T! I always liked Riker but he often seemed to be the Trek equivalent of a wallflower, standing in the background just watching the action go on around him. I think that's because his role changed over the years from its initial concept. At first, Gene Rodenberry was really pushing the idea that the Captain of the Enterprise is so important that he should stay on the ship instead of leading dangerous away missions. You see that a lot in the first few seasons, with Riker playing the action hero on the away team. But as the series continued you see more of a concentration on Picard in heroic situations, which, of course, meant that Riker's initial role became redundant. So much so that his solution of saving the Enterprise from collision with the USS Bozeman by decompressing the main shuttlebay was rejected countless times and was eventually accepted only when Data had definite proof th

Star Trek: Voyager Crew

I recently completed my quest to watch every Star Trek episode from every series, and one series that I found to be surprisingly entertaining was Voyager. When it first aired I was totally fried on Star Trek so I just dismissed it, but I’m glad that I finally got around to watching it. Unlike Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, both of which needed a couple of seasons to get their bearings, Voyager hit the ground running. Even the earliest episodes were strong and it was clear that the producers knew exactly what they wanted to do with the series from the get-go. And unlike the other series that lost a bit of the magic in their later seasons, Voyager maintained its quality all the way through. I’d argue that the best of Voyager was never as good as the best of either TNG or DS9, but it was a consistently good Star Trek series, even if it never became great . Q and El-Aurians

For this tribute, I grouped Q together with the El-Aurians (Guinan and Dr. Soran) for a couple of reasons. First, they're all aliens that are physically identical to humans. And second, Guinan and Q had an antagonistic relationship with a history of conflict with each other. Q has always been a favorite character of mine, acting as the Mister Mxyzptlk of the TNG Universe. I've also been very fond of Guinan. As I stated previously in the Troi tribute , she fits the "character who senses something wrong" shoes really well by not being a real empath and giving everything away prematurely. She also has a really interesting implied history (as alluded to in episodes like Time's Arrow ) that makes her character mysterious and fun to conjecture about. Dr. Soran? He was okay in Generations , I suppose. He had kind of interesting motivations but ultimately he was just a cliched villain. Anyway, let's check out their respective action figures!
